Henry Derksen Memorial Classic
The sun was shining brightly for the 12th Annual Henry Derksen Memorial Classic at Bel Acres Golf and Country Club on July 20th.
Each year, golfers gather for this Texas Scramble style golf tournament with proceeds going to the ALS Society of Manitoba. The tournament is held in memory of Garry Fast’s uncle, Henry Derksen, who died of ALS. Also known as Lou Gehrig ’s disease, ALS affects 315 Manitobans and approximately 3000 Canadians.
Team’ers Susan Fast and Dawn Colquhoun welcomed golfers to Hole 3 with delicious rhubarb, cherry and apple platz. Platz, aka strudel, is a yummy Mennonite coffee cake made with seasonal fruit and berries. Golfers were also invited to Spin to Win for a further donation to ALS. Most found that whatever they didn’t want the wheel to land on is where it landed, do 10 push ups or jumping jacks; tee off with your putter; sing a song or donate an additional $5, the later had several golfers going back to their golf cart for an additional $5 so they wouldn’t have to sing a song! Thanks for being such great sports!
A fun day and lots of laughs were had by all. Team raised a further $695 at Hole 3 and matched the donation with an additional $500.
Thank you to everyone who participated. Thank you as well to The Crusty Bun in St. Vital for providing a platz so tasty it had some golfers reminiscing of the platz their Oma used to make.
